Lisa Wilkinson 'great' after Today departure

She managed to blindside everyone, including her former colleagues after jumping ship from Channel Nine to Channel Ten, but Lisa Wilkinson says she's doing "great" despite her shock exit from the Today show.

After announcing her departure from the network after a decade-long stint hosting the breakfast show, the 57-year-old told The Daily Telegraph that while she's struggled to keep up with calls and messages, she's doing "great".

"My phone has gone into complete meltdown, but I’m going off to see my mum," Lisa told the outlet.

"She’s very worried and I’m just going to go and let her know I’m OK, in fact I’m more than OK, I’m great. I’ve always been a very hard worker, and I’ve always been very proud of my work and I’ve loved every single job I’ve ever had.

"I feel very privileged with all the opportunities I’ve been afforded over the years."

However there was one area Lisa refused to comment on, saying she didn't "have anything to say at this stage" when asked by the publication about her pay negotiations with Nine and whether or not her new employer was able beat it.

Lisa's exit from the network comes after speculation surrounding her salary expectations, with reports she demanded the same pay as co-host Karl Stefanovic. Reports suggested negotiations for Lisa got to $1.8 million per year, however still fell short of Karl's reported $2 million.

The veteran journalist announced on Monday evening she would joining rival network Ten, where she would take up a role as host of The Project and The Sunday Project.

Channel Nine released a statement saying: "Nine today confirmed we have been unable to meet the expectations of Lisa Wilkinson and her manager on a contract renewal for a further period.

"We express our gratitude for Lisa for her 10 years with the Today Show are disappointed we find ourselves in this position. Nine will be going in another direction and will be considering our options in coming weeks and months."

Meanwhile Lisa's decision to leave the most coveted job in TV came as a surprise to her former Today colleagues, including co-host Karl, who revealed on Tuesday morning he was "shocked" at the news.

Karl paid tribute to his former co-host, saying she handled her role on the breakfast show with "grace and beauty" on Tuesday morning.
