Prince Harry gets major royal promotion ahead of his wedding

He may already be one of the most talked about royals on the planet but Prince Harry has just been given a promotion.

The 33-year-old flame-haired prince is moving up in the royal ranks by taking over a job from his grandfather, Prince Philip, who retired earlier this year.

Ahead of his wedding to Meghan Markle in May, Prince Harry has been bestowed with the very prestigious title of Captain General of the Royal Marines.

The Duke of Edinburgh has held the title for the past 64-years but passed it on to his grandson at a ceremony during the week at Buckingham Palace.

“The Queen has been pleased to give her formal approval to the appointment of His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales as Captain General Royal Marines,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

Prince Harry famously carried out his studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and completed two stints in Afghanistan.

The news comes as plans for his wedding to former Suits star, Meghan Markle, are getting into full swing.

The couple are said to be spending the festive season making arrangements for their May 19th wedding, which will be held at Windsor Castle.

And while the world may be waiting with bated breath to see Meghan’s dress and how cute Prince George and Princess Charlotte will look, some royal watchers aren’t impressed with the fact that the ceremony will be held on a Saturday.

It’s believed that the loved-up royals are actually breaking a long royal tradition by marrying on a Saturday.

While there is no official rule that a royal couple must not wed on a weekend day, most couples over the years have chosen to walk down the aisle on a week day.

Prince William and Kate Middleton married on a Friday in 2011, while Prince Charles and Diana tied the knot on a Wednesday in 1981 and even the Queen and Prince Philip wed on a Thursday way back in 1947.

The day is also totally inconvenient for Prince William, who is President of the Football Association, as the FA Cup final also lands on that day.
