Harry and Meghan set the date: What you need to know

The date has been set for the wedding of 2018.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced that they will be tying the knot on May 19, at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

The official statement read: “His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle will marry on 19th May 2018.”

“Today's announcement follows earlier confirmation of the month of the wedding and its location at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.”

The couple have chosen a date after the Duchess of Cambridge’ s due date in April, meaning the new royal baby could be one of the guests.

Interestingly, the 19th of May is a Saturday, which is quite unusual for the royal family as many royals have opted to get married on a weekday. When Kate and William wed on Friday, April 29, 2011, it was made a public holiday.

It's also the same day as the FA Cup final, which may cause conflict among footballing households if the two events are televised at the same time.

Harry's brother Prince William, is also the FA president and traditionally presents the trophy to the winning team's captain at the end of the game, so it'll be interesting to see whether he will still be able to make that commitment.

The royal family have said they will pay for the wedding, with further details to be announced in due course.

Harry isn’t the first royal to choose not to marry in Westminster Abbey. Prince Charles wed Diana in St. Paul’s Cathedral, while Prince Edward opted for St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Zara Phillips went further afield, opting for Canongate in Edinburgh.

Now the big question is: What will Meghan wear? While many have pointed to her friend (and reported matchmaker) the designer Misha Nonoo, the Bahrain-born creative doesn’t have any experience with bridal wear.

Other names in the running include Erdem, Elie Saab, Carolina Herrera, and Harry’s friend Victoria Beckham.

Although royals are expected to choose a British designer, it’s possible that Meghan could honour her American heritage with a US name instead.

The couple’s title will not be revealed until their wedding day, although royal experts believe that they’ll known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Wedding guests are likely to include political figures including Harry’s friends Barack and Michelle Obama as well as celebrity names such as Serena Williams, Priyanka Chopra, and the Beckhams.

The royal couple announced their engagement in November after Meghan was given a three-stone diamond engagement ring featuring a stone from one of the couple’s favorite locations, Botswana, and two from Princess Diana’s personal jewellery collection.


In their first interview together, the couple spoke about how they met, revealing that Harry proposed over roast chicken in the confines of the royal’s two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage.

The pair will continue to live in the cottage once they are married.
