The disturbing truth about using sheet masks

Sheet masks recently emerged as one of the hottest beauty trends to come out of Korea, however if you're a fan of them, you might want to take a read of this.

According to a post on Reddit, there's a very good chance that the sheet masks you use to cover your face have been folded and packaged in someone's house and not in a sanitary factory like you would think.

A Korean woman living in Seoul, posted an image to Reddit which appeared to show a worker using their hands to fold the mask - which is usually filled with a cream - by using a piece of cardboard.

It also details that the dry masks are dropped off at the employee's home and for $7 an hour they fold them with their hands and package them in an envelope.

"Hi, I'm a Korean girl from Seoul. I just wanted to share that, recently, in Korea it's revealed that sheet masks are made in conditions that are far from hygienic," the Reddit post read.

"I'm not sure if this issue has made international or not, but I thought I'd share it since international consumers have a right to know as well. I hope, by making this an international issue, some companies will change how they manage production processes.

"Here I attach some of links that show how the masks are made. I am sorry that the pages are in Korean, but I think the pictures speak for themselves."

It's claimed that the masks sit in the envelopes until they are picked up from the employee's house and are steralised at the factory.

However because of how they are made, these masks are often found to contain dirt and human hair.

People have also reported that their masks smelled of smoke, they irritated their skin and they were filled with debris.

The revelations have caused concern for many kbeauty fans online, with one woman taking to Racked to vent her anger.

"I'm staring at my stash of sheet masks, including some from Mediheal, trying to figure out what to do with them because I don't want to risk putting something contaminated on my face," she said.

"Im side-eyeing my sheet masks so hard right now," another person said on Reddit.

"Wow... this is an eye opener and I'll do some more research on the matter," another commenter said.
