The first trailer for 'Star Trek Beyond' has dropped

The debut trailer for ‘Star Trek Beyond’ has been released by Paramount giving us our first look at the third film in the revitalised ‘Star Trek’ series.

The use of Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’ reminds us we’re still in JJ Abrams’ reboot universe, but while Mr. Abrams is off working on ‘Star Wars’, ‘Fast & Furious 6’s Justin Lin has stepped aboard the bridge as director.

The trailer doesn’t give much away about the plot of the film, but we see the USS Enterprise exploding while Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk asks: “We have no ship, no crew, how are we going to get out of this one?”

“We will find hope,” replies Zachary Quinto’s Spock, “In the impossible.”

Elsewhere, Idris Elba’s villain is revealed, although you’d hardly know the ‘Luther’ star was buried beneath the creature make-up. His voice is unmistakable though when you hear him growl: “This is where the frontier pushes back!”

Nice ‘Star Trek’ reference!

The trailer also introduces a mysterious new character played by ‘Kingsman’s Sofia Boutella. The dancer-turned-actress appears to be playing a pale-skinned warrior who crosses paths with Captain Kirk.

The new film is being released in 2016 on the 50th anniversary of the original TV show. Sadly, there’s no cameo from Leonard Nimoy this time around as the Spock star passed away in 2014, but William Shatner is rumoured to be making an appearance although that’s yet to be confirmed.

'Star Trek Beyond' will hit Aussie cinemas in 2016
