"I was just at my local op-shop and a man behind me noticed on my back that there was a mole.

"He said ‘I don’t want to frighten you but I’ve just had a similar mole cut out of my back and you should see your GP’."

Maroney said she immediately went to see her doctor who cut out the growth before delivering the bad news: the mole was malignant.

"I've just had more cut out," she said. "Now we're waiting to see if the cancer has spread".

The swimmer said she's gone back to the op-shop several times to try and find the man without any luck.

"I still don't know who the man is," she said. "I went back to the op-shop and wanted to find the man and give him a box of chocolates and say thank you."

Maroney said she is staying mentally strong for the sake of her three children - Paris, 7, Capri, 5, and River, 3 - who she is the primary carer of.

"Straight away my main focus was my children," she said. "I’m not gonna die yet".

Maroney's partner is former rugby player Perry Cross.
