Sinead O'Connor is alive and well - and not planning to "jump off a bridge".

The Irish singer-songwriter resurfaced on social media, taking to her Facebook page to officially shut down rumours that she was suicidal and threatening to kill herself after authorities reported she had "gone missing" earlier on Thursday.

O'Connor - who hadn't posted on her Facebook page since June 5 - officially responded to reports in a series of angry posts.

According to TMZ reports on Thursday, the Chicago Police Department received a call from Irish authorities saying the singer - who's been based in the US since March - contacted her family to inform them she was planning to "jump off a bridge" in the Chicago area.

"The word from the Ireland police sergeant Claire Mulligan, Dublin, Ireland, is saying that at 1530 hours Sinead O'Connor called and said, 'I'm on a bridge in Chicago and I'm going to jump,'" an alert on the CPD scanner said.

Police then proceeded with an active search to find the Irish singer in the Chicago area.

According to reports police spotted someone who "looked like" Sinead, but it turned out to be a 54-year-old man.

In her Facebook rant O'Connor commented on Britain's decision to exit the European Union, supporting the move as a win for Ireland.

"CONGRATS TO EVERY MAN, WOMAN AND CHILD WHO EVER DIED FOR THE CAUSE OF IRISH FREEDOM, AND ALSO TO ALL THOSE INCLUDING MYSELF, WHO HAVE BEEN PERSECUTED MERCILESSLY BY THE IRISH SO CALLED FREE-STATE FOR HAVING DECLARED SUPPORT FOR SINN FEIN AND THE REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT."
