MKR judges fight over Tim and Kyle

They’re usually on the same side, but tensions broke out big time on Wednesday night’s My Kitchen Rules, with the judges butting heads over Tim and Kyle’s dessert.

The second semi-final saw the SA pub mates serve brownie with chocolate stout mousse and coffee syrup.

And while the stout flavour sparked a grimace or two, it was the crushed pretzel topping that really got the fur flying at the tasting table.

“I’m a little quizzical about the broken-up pretzels,” blasted guest chef Liz Egan, taking umbridge with the fact they’d not even bothered to make their own.

“If they’re really fighting to stay in this competition then surely they could do better than getting a packet out and sprinkling them on.”

While judge Pete Evans agreed it wasn’t good enough at semi-final stage, chef Karen Martini challenged Liz, insisting pretzels are “hip” right now.

“I disagree with you,” she said. “The pretzel thing is in at the moment.”

And when Colin Fassnidge jumped into the fray, arguing that it’s not a “deal-breaker”, a defensive Liz shot back, “It’s my opinion.”

Earlier in the show, Kyle admitted he reckoned the topping would take their dessert from a six to a 10, much to the mirth of fellow competitors Amy and Tyson who were watching from the sidelines.

Sadly, despite wowing with their confit duck with coffee pumpkin main, the boys also got short shrift for their entré, with the entire panel criticising their stingy portions of scallops with celeriac puree and pancetta.

Meanwhile, rivals Valeria and Courtney were on fire, winning raves for their peppered chicken livers with fennel and tomato chutney entré, and oxtail stew with pickled onion mash and eggplant kasundi main.

However, they too stumbled with their dessert, serving cardamom dumplings with saffron crème Anglaise that the judges deemed “too sweet”.

But their kitchen crime wasn’t severe enough to see them booted, with the ladies scoring 50 while the boys scraped just 46, meaning Valerie and Courtney will face Amy and Tyson in the grand final.
