Joel Creasey jokes about 'Cocaine Cassie' at ARIA Awards

Joel Creasey is known for his no-holds-barred approach when it comes to his comedy, and when he took to the ARIA Awards stage on Tuesday night, he didn't shy away from controversy during his presenting segment.

The 27-year-old left fellow presenter, US singer Julia Michaels, rather speechless, when he made a joke about Australian Cassie Sainsbury, who was caught at Bogota airport with almost six kilos of cocaine concealed with headphones back in April.

"Look, I have got to be honest, it has been a weird year in the Australian music industry," Joel informed Julia, before referring to 'Cocaine Cassie' as a 'musician'.

"Nikki Webster, obviously you would know her?" he continued. She is here. She has re-released 'Strawberry Kisses'."

He continued: "The band Young Divas. They have confirmed they are definitely not doing a reunion tour. They physically can't.

"We have a new celebrity in this country now. Her name is Cassie. I guess could you say she is in the music industry," he chuckled.

"Import-export, mostly. Headphones. Anyway, those headphones did not make it back to Australia, nor did Cassie.

"So that is just a little heads up of what is happening here. I think a few people in this room were counting on those headphones for the after-party. Sorry, they are not here," he concluded.

Poor Julia had no idea what was going on. "I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about," she said.

"But can we please present these awards. Because I feel like I might lose my Visa if I stand here any longer."

In April, 22-year-old Cassie Sainsbury was caught at Bogota airport with almost six kilos of cocaine concealed with headphones.

But prosecutors believe she could have been a decoy while a bigger haul was smuggled through unnoticed.

She was a pawn in a well-organised, international drug syndicate, according to her lawyer.

"There are people in Australia, there are people in Hong Kong, there are people in London and there are people in Colombia," Mr Herran said.
