Watch what happens when you pour acid on a Big Mac

It’s not groundbreaking news that McDonald’s probably isn’t the most nutritionally sound meal choice we can make.

But what exactly are we putting into our stomach when we choose that delicious combination of two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions and a sesame seed bun?

YouTube channel Let's Melt This decided to put the Big Mac to the test and videoed what took place when they poured sulfuric acid on one unsuspecting burger.

Frighteningly, the time-lapse video showed the burger turning a shade of black, with the bun not dissolving as you might think, but going rock hard instead.

“We originally thought the Big Mac would dissolve into a giant pile of mush. Turns out the sulfuric acid actually cooked the outside of the Big Mac bun until it was rock hard. Almost as if we left it in the oven to long,” wrote the budding scientists at Let’s Melt This. “We time lapsed this video over a 30-minute period so you could view the entire process quicker.”

Fair enough that this newly crusty exterior protected the meaty insides of the burger, but further probing by experimenters revealed that the meat patties seemed almost untouched by the acid.

Scary stuff.
