Diner almost eats rare black pearl worth $600 in her pasta

A Washington woman ordered a seafood pasta that came with a particularly expensive garnish.

Lindsay Hasz had one rare evening without the kids so she and her husband decided to celebrate with a nice quiet meal at Montalcino Ristorante Italiano.

Hasz had ordered a delicious bowl of frutti di mare from the Issaquah restaurant. Midway through tucking into the pasta, she bit down onto a hard foreign object, which nearly broke her tooth.

"It was pretty dark in the restaurant, so it was hard to tell what it was, but when I looked at it closer, it looked totally round and perfect," Hasz told ABC News, “Too perfect."

She was so curious about the small object that she took it to a gemologist who confirmed it was, in fact, a pearl. Not just any pearl, a rare black Quahog pearl.

President of the Northwest Geological Laboratory and director of the Northwest Geological Institute, Ted Irwin, informed Hasz the rare pearl is worth roughly $600.

Irwin told ABC News the chances of finding one of these Quahog pearls, which are typically from the New England area, are "one in a couple million."

Not only lucky for Hasz, but as a result the Italian restaurant’s business has boomed.

The owners told ABC News, people are coming in and ordering the frutti di mare dish with hopes of finding another black pearl.

Knowing the chances now are pretty slim, it seems quite unlikely another customer will find another black pearl at the same restaurant. Perhaps winning the lottery would be more likely?

Had Hasz bitten down on something other than a black pearl, chances are high business wouldn’t be going so well for the restaurant.

Lucky it turned out to be a win-win for everyone.
