Interesting fact of the day: outside of humans and the nine-banded armadillo, identical twins are pretty rare in the animal world.

Now, for the first time, the world has welcomed the first pair of identical twin puppies after a female Irish wolfhound gave birth at South Africa’s Rant en Dal Animal Hospital.

Reports say the mum was in labour for two hours, before vet Dr Kurt de Cramer stepped in to perform a Caesarean section.

He noticed two of the male pups were attached with umbilical cords to the same placenta, and later did blood tests to determine they were identical twins.

“When I realised that the puppies were of the same gender and that they had very similar markings, I also immediately suspected that they might be identical twins having originated from the splitting of an embryo,” he told the BBC.

Researchers say that although it’s possible identical pup twins may have been born in the past, this is the first instance they have been lucky enough to confirm it.
