Melania mocked while reading to sick kids

With her 10-year-old son still at school in New York, Melania Trump hasn’t had much time to spare for official First Lady duties.

But when she did make the effort to visit sick children in hospital last week, her reception online was rather frosty.

The former model sat down to read an excerpt from one of her favourite books, “Oh the places you’ll go!” by Dr Seuss, before making her way around the room to greet some of the kids.

Things got a little awkward when her crowd didn’t seem all that enthusiastic about her appearance (I mean they are unwell and in hospital after all), and it didn’t help that one little girl Melania tried to take a photo with simply refused to co-operate and wouldn’t smile or be hugged.

While this prompted a few laughs on social media, the biggest burn came from the journalist’s report from the press pool, which recounted what happened in the sassiest way possible.

“In a small room … First Lady Melania Trump sat in a wooden chair and looked at several children in the room,” it read.

“‘We will read some books today,’ said Trump. ‘So do you know what is today?’ she said. The children looked at her blankly.”

“When she got to a passage in the book about a ‘slump,’ she looked at the children and said, ‘So sometimes you don’t feel good, right? But then – what do you do?’ The children waited. ‘You go places where you feel better,’ she told them,” the report continued.

“After she finished, she looked at the children and said: ‘Do you like the book?’ One girl held up her hand. Trump gave her the book and said: ‘I encourage you all to read a lot—to get educated.’”

We get that she’s not everyone’s favourite FLOTUS (and she’s certainly no Michelle Obama!) but awkward as it was, she was spending time with some pretty sick kids at the end of the day, so we could cut her a little slack.
