Meet the man who sails around the world with his pet chicken

When you think of the ultimate travel companion, we bet a pet chicken isn't the first thing to come to mind.

However Guirec Soudé, a 24-year-old French man, decided to do just that and take his beloved chicken Monique sailing around the world with him.

For the past two years, Guirec and Monique have sailed the oceans of the world together, visiting Greenland, The Northern Lights, The Caribbean and The Canary Islands.

Speaking to the BBC, Guirec, who now has 15,000 followers on Instagram, said he knew Monique would be the perfect travel partner in crime when he first set eyes on her.

"I knew she was the one straight away," Guirec said.

"She was only about four or five months old then, and had never left the Canary Islands. I didn't speak any Spanish and she didn't speak any French, but we got along."

While Guirec said he had some trepidation about Monique's sea legs, she turned out to be a natural sailor and now he has eggs on tap when he's out on the high seas.

"The hen was an ideal choice," he said.

"[She] doesn't need that much looking after and I'm able to get eggs at sea.

"Compared with people, she doesn't complain at all," he said."She follows me everywhere, and doesn't create any problems. All I need to do is shout 'Monique!' and she will come to me, sit on me, give me company. She is amazing."

Their next stop is Alaska via the Bering Strait but after that Guirec said he has no plan.

"We haven't talked about it yet, but we will," he said.

"We talk a lot, Monique and I."

Now that's the ideal partnership.
