Anthony Bourdain reveals the 6 menu items you should never order
Top chef Anthony Bourdain has revealed what you should never order from the menu and chances are, you do.
From Eggs Benedict at Sunday brunch to fish on a Monday, here are the dishes you should steer clear from next time you dine at a restaurant.
Eggs with hollandaise sauce
It looks like one of the most popular breakfast items is off the menu! Anthony says that brunch is the time where chefs can get away with serving leftover food from the Friday or Saturday night before. “'Bacteria love hollandaise,” he wrote in his book, Kitchen Confidential. “And nobody I know has ever made hollandaise to order.”
Steak well done
Not only do chefs hate cooking a well-done steak (they find it ruins the meat), but Anthony claims you might end up with an unsavoury piece of beef. “What happens when the chef finds a tough, slightly skanky end-cut of sirloin that's been pushed repeatedly to the back of the pile? He can throw it out, but that's a total loss...,” he says. “Or he can ‘save for well-done’: serve it to some rube who prefers his meat or fish incinerated into a flavourless, leathery hunk of carbon.”
Any chicken dish
Anthony advised against ordering any meal featuring chicken as the meat is difficult to keep moist and flavoursome. You’re better off ordering red meat, such as lamb.
Seafood if you’re not by the ocean
The further away from the sea the restaurant is, the less likely it is that the seafood is actually fresh (it may have even been frozen if travelling inland). Anthony suggests not ordering the seafood unless the restaurant caught it that day. Another hot tip? Stay away from oysters unless you know they're fresh - bad oysters will make you sick.
Wagyu or Kobe beef
Don’t waste your money on the world’s most exxy meat unless you know you’re getting bang for your buck. You can tell if the Wagyu or Kobe beef you’re served is legit because it will be in dished small portions. Any restaurant with a burger that claims to has a Wagyu beef patty is probably lying – chefs generally won’t mince such an expensive cut of meat.

Fish on a Monday
“I never order fish on Monday, unless I'm eating at a four-star restaurant where I know they are buying their fish directly from the source,” says Anthony. “I know how old most seafood is on Monday - about four to five days old!” Don’t say we didn’t warn you…
