Australians love winter, new research finds

With the snow still falling steady on the Aussie mountains, people are flocking to the skifields to enjoy the great early season conditions.

In the National Winter Report released this week from Newspoll, research reveals that Australia is a nation of cold temperature lovers, with winter and snowy destinations high on the priority list.

The Newspoll survey, commissioned by Thredbo, shows that while Australia is known for its sunny climate and summer sports, three in four (74%) Australians are very keen to go on a ski holiday.

Surprisingly, when it comes to each state, Queenslanders were shown to be the biggest fans of winter, with 30% recording their preference of winter over summer.

Despite this fondness for the cold season, 20% of Australians have never seen or experienced snow in their lifetime and the majority (65%) of those polled who have skied or snowboarded have never done so in Australia.

Angus Thomson, Thredbo Director of Brand Development, comments: “The results from The National Winter Report are really interesting. We’ve always known that visitors to Thredbo love winter, but it’s exciting to see that a lot more of the country also like the colder months."

In the past week Thredbo has received over one and a half metres of accumulated snowfall which means the whole resort is open for business.
