Meet Australia’s first wife and wife: Lauren and Amy
Australia has been introduced to our first official Mrs and Mrs, after a NSW couple made history by having the country’s first legal same-sex wedding.
Lauren Price and Amy Laker, said ‘I do’ in a romantic garden ceremony in the Sydney suburb of Camden on Saturday, exactly one week after changes to the marriage act were made to allow same-sex couples to wed.
Normally, two people about to tie the knot have to lodge a ‘notice of intended marriage’ a month before their big day, but this waiting period was waved in Lauren and Amy’s case.
Lauren, who’s family live in Wales in the UK, had already organised for her relatives to come to Australia to attend her and Amy's civil ceremony, so when the law changed, she was granted an exception, and much to the couple's joy, the ceremony became a legal wedding.
Both brides walked down the aisle dressed in white and holding bouquets of geraniums, sunflowers and baby's breath, while 65 of their loved-ones watched on.
The day was a long time coming for Lauren, 31, and Amy, 29, who have been planning their wedding in the two years since they got engaged.
Now that they’ve started their new life together as wife and wife, they hope to start a family of their own.
“For us being legally married is more about automatically being next of kin,” Amy told the Daily Mail earlier this week.
“Also because we want children so it makes that clearer, this is my child’s other mother, my wife.”
Congrats, ladies!
