Meghan's awkward moment with the Queen

Meghan Markle’s first solo royal engagement with the Queen has been a resounding success, but keen-eyed onlookers have pointed out a slightly awkward moment which saw Meghan get a little confused.

The new Duchess of Sussex kicked off her royal duties on Thursday by being Queen Elizabeth II’s plus-one for an official visit to Cheshire, England.

It marked the newlywed’s first joint appearance with Her Majesty, a courtesy that was also extended to Kate Middleton about a year after her 2011 wedding to Prince William.

Of course we can forgive Meghan for being a little nervous – who wouldn’t be when left alone with the Queen!

Footage captured by a local LBC reporter showed the pair of royals in a moment of confusion, as Meghan offered to let the Queen get into the car first.

She then suggested they switch and asked “What’s your preference?”.

It is believed that Meghan was being sweet and offered to let the 92-year-old go before her because she prefers to sit behind the driver’s seat.

“The Queen always sits behind the driver,” Etiquette expert William Hanson told MailOnline.

“This is just a case of habit not protocol (protocol actually says the most important person sits diagonally behind the driver) but the Queen has always preferred being directly behind whoever is driving her.”

Following her first solo engagement with the Queen in Cheshire, a body language expert said that Meghan looked ‘a bit bored.’

Toby Ingham, a British psychotherapist, analysed footage of Meghan for the Daily Mail in which Meghan adjusts her dress and her purse, plays with her earring, and fixes her hair within seconds.

Ingham notes that her behaviour is possibly due to lack of interest in conversation with David Parr, chief executive of Halton Council in the town where the event was held.

‘‘It appears that the man on Meghan’s right is the cause of her fidgetiness. It looks like she is rather distracted by his interest, information and conversation than anything to do with the Queen,” Ingham revealed.
