Sadly, we can’t stop the ageing process, but there’s lots that can be done to keep you looking and feeling young. Follow these tips to fight the signs of ageing:
1. Stop the stress
With busy lives and stressful jobs, it’s easy to find yourself stressed and exhausted at the end of the day. Unfortunately, this rapidly accelerates the ageing process and you’ll notice your skin, hair and body all suffering. Try to notice when the stress starts to build and take five minutes to breathe deeply, reassess and return calmly to what you were doing.
2. Wear sunscreen
Whether the sun is out or not, SPF is vital to protect your skin from those nasty UV rays. Harmful rays can cause damage in both summer and winter, so don’t just reach for the sunscreen when you’re at the beach. Sun-damaged skin can add years to your complexion so try to find a daily moisturiser with an SPF of at least 15.
3. Up your antioxidant intake
Antioxidants protect key cell components from damage, so try to ensure that you are hitting your recommended intake each day. Superfoods such as acai berry, watercress and various types of beans should be incorporated into your diet alongside a good skincare regime using products that boast antioxidising properties. Supplements such as a good multivitamin or vitamin E will also help to keep your skin supple and your mind active.
4. Hydrate yourself
Dehydrated skin becomes dry and wrinkled far more quickly than skin that is regularly hydrated by both water intake and moisturising skincare. Drinking the recommended dose of water each day will also prevent feelings of lethargy and sluggishness. Try to avoid too much coffee and tea, or opt for a herbal variety such as an antioxidant-rich green tea.
5. Hands and eyes
Hands and eyes are two parts of the body where ageing is the most obvious. Look after your hands; take the time to massage them, apply moisturising hand cream and tend to your nails and cuticles. Keep eyes looking fresh with revitalising eye creams and avoid using cheap eye shadow, eye liners or mascara.
6. Sleep… Zzzzzzz
Numerous scientific studies have shown the benefits of sleep in stalling and slowing the ageing process. Dark, tired eyes and exhausted, slumped shoulders will make you look years older than you should, and sleeping less than six hours a night can increase the risk of obesity, heart attacks and depression.
