Ever wondered what running does to your skin?

There's nothing more satisfying than going for a run and building up a sweat; but have you ever wondered what all that sheen is doing to your skin?

Running does affect what happens on your face. So here's what you need to do to avoid post-workout pimples.

Runner’s red face

If you’re one of those people that goes fire engine red the second you hit the pavement, there’s no need to worry. According to experts, blood vessels dilate to try and release heat, which is why you go all flushed.

There is one thing to watch out for though. If you suffer from rosacea, these dilated blood vessels can worsen your condition. Try splashing your face with water, either from a water bubbler or your drink bottle to cool yourself down.

Keep calm and collagen on

Getting your blood pumping can actually do your skin wonders, thanks to increased circulation which helps collagen production. “Increasing your circulation with cardio delivers a greater amount of oxygen and nutrients to your skin, which helps repair it and increase collagen production,” dermatologist Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin tells Allure. In addition, increased blood flow can help nourish skin and carry away waste products.

Running bare

Can't stand the thought of going anywhere without your full face of make-up? Well, when at the gym or going for a run you should make an exception. While wearing lip and eye products won’t affect you too much, it’s a good idea to clean off your face make-up. “Sweating in foundation can clog your pores and lead to breakouts,” dermatologist Jeffrey Benabio tells Prevention.

Make sure to sunscreen

You might think you’re only outside for a quick jog, but it’s important to protect your skin - plus all those kilometres can add up to some serious sun exposure. Make sure to apply sunscreen before you lace up, and remember, you’ll sweat, so it’s a good idea to pick something that is water-resistant.

Sweat it out - then take it off

Don’t be fooled by the idea that it's sweat causing your post-workout breakout. It’s actually you sitting around in your clammy clothes after your exercise. There’s even a term for it – acne mechanica – and it refers to pimples caused by friction from rubbing bacteria-laden fabric or materials like clothes or towels against your skin.
