Here's why you get white marks on your nails

We’ve all been told time and time again that those pesky white spots on our nails are caused by calcium deficiency.

But while we’re over here guzzling milk and scoffing down wheels of Brie (any excuse!), we’re not actually helping matters at all.

The scientific term for the white lines is punctate leokonychia, which most commonly arrive following "trauma" to the nail - even just when you bump them lightly. Touchy little fellas!

But it turns out that there's another thing happening to your nails that is flagged by those tiny white spots... A fungal nail infection. Well, now you know.

Apparently when your body tries to fight infections, it needs all the strength it can muster to fight off the germs.

So it relaxes on protecting the “minor” parts of your body that it sees as insignificant. Yeah, your body doesn’t care that you want those perfect French-manicured ring snaps on your wedding day.

The white spots or lines merely suggest that your body is pausing the growth for now.

But don’t freak out! Because by the time they appear on your nails, your body has already gotten rid of the pesky infection.
