Is your make-up making you look ugly?

Lost without your make-up bag?

The whole purpose of mascara, blusher, lip stick and eye shadow is that it's supposed to enhance your beauty and make you look better.

But what if we were to tell you, you could actually be making yourself look ugly?

And we're not just talking about wearing too much of it - according to facialist and skincare expert Lisa Franklin how we wear our eye make-up can either make you look better or worse! And it's all to do with the undertone and overtone of your skin.

"Your undertone is genetic, and will never change," she told the Daily Mail.

"To determine this, pick a yellow-based and pink-based foundation and put a little on each cheek. If the pink blends into your skin, you have a cold complexion, and a yellow base is warm.

"Your overtone changes due to external factors such as sun exposure, illness or fatigue. Discovering this leaves you with room to experiment between seasons."

If your skin has:

A warm tone:
You suit browns, taupes and creams.

A cool tone:
You suit a strong blacks and greys work, as well as neutrals with a pink base.

When it comes to eye colours:

Blue eyes should look for bright metallics

Green eyes glow with lilacs and lavenders

Brown eyed girls suit most colours, but if you’re more hazel try enhancing the green tones using a turquoise or teal

"Your eye colour can always influence what shades and intensity you should go for when applying eye makeup," Anna Priadka, NARS Lead Stylist says.

"For instance darker toned eyes such as brown and hazel often look best in deep, intense shades such as midnight blue and emerald green.

"Lighter toned grey, blue and green eyes can look better with less intense shades with more pops such as russet toned reds and violet toned purples."

And that's not it!

Tips on how to apply make-up to different eye shapes:

Almond eyes - apply eyeshadow and liner to create a subtle winged effect.

Hooded eyes - define the make-up on the lid only. Strong liner suits this, but don't highlight the brown bone as it will make it look more hooded.

Round eyes - to give the illusion that they are more almond, use eyeshadow or liner at the outer edges only.

Close set eyes - can be balanced by applying highlights or light colours on the inner corner of the eyes, and by using colour only on the outer edges.

'Try to avoid taking your eyeliner the whole way across the lashline," she added. "Just on the outer corners which will give the illusion of space."
