Here's how to tell if your hair straightener is past its expiry date

If you've had your beloved GHD or Remington styler since the year 2000, then you may want to check if it's past its expiry date.

Just like all electrical appliances, hair straighteners are subjected to wear and tear over time and if you're the kind of girl who can't leave the house without poker straight locks, then there's a high chance you could be damaging your tresses with your flat irons.

And while they may still seem to be in fine working order, using damaged plates could cause you to burn and break your locks and strip all the natural oils out of your hair.

Here's how to know whether or not you need a new hair straightener.
Here's how to know whether or not you need a new hair straightener.

First of all make sure when you buy a new straightener that you get one with tourmaline or ceramic plates as they are less likely to crack if you let them fall.

If you notice that the plates are scratched, or appear to have worn thin in one part, then it's likely that it's time to go shopping for a new one.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan hair stylist Fabio Scalia said if you find yourself needing to straighten your hair numerous times to get the desired results, this could also be an indicator that it's past its expiry date.

The blinking light on your straightener is also trying to tell you that it has given up.

"A good flat iron has a blinking light that tells you when the ideal temperature is reached. The indicator will also tell you when it's time to start hunting for a new one," Fabio said.

“If the light blinks often while in use, your iron has stopped holding heat and is on its way out.”

Time to get checking our lights and plates.
