We've been brushing our hair wrong this whole time

It's not every day you learn something new when it comes to being an adult.

From the day we were born we've been taught how to feed ourselves, how to dress every day, how to brush our hair and how to clean our teeth properly.

However, it appears we may have have been brushing our hair all wrong, with experts saying there's a specific way you should be doing it to avoid pesky split ends.

The first mistake we're making is using a brush when our hair is wet and we're straight out of the shower.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Rob Fitch, Principle Stylist at Josh Wood Atelier, said you always use a wet brush if you want to detangle your mane and you should work your way from the ends of the hair upwards.

"Apply a little leave-in conditioner (I like Sachajuan), use a wide tooth comb and start from the ends up," he said.

He went on to claim that you should never brush curly hair when it's dry and instead use your fingers to pull apart the strands.

Hair stylist Larry King, added that if you must brush your hair when it's wet, use a comb, which will "eliminate tension and stress on the tangles which stops stretching and breaking of the hair."

According to Neil Moodie, Session Stylist and Viviscal Ambassador, one of the most common mistakes women make is not brushing their hair often enough.

"Hair has a lifespan of approximately seven years and on average we lose around 120 hairs a day to make way for new ones to grow. If you don't brush your hair then these hairs won't loosen out."
