Research says acne sufferers could look younger for longer

If you're currently freaking out over some aggressive-looking pimples on your face, it turns out you may have the last laugh after all.

There's finally some good news for acne-sufferers after new research has revealed women with acne are likely to look younger as they age than those with flawless skin.

According to a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, scientists found that women who suffer from acne are far better protected against the ageing process.

They discovered that the cells which protect women against ageing are linked to the same gene that causes acne.

“For many years dermatologists have identified that the skin of acne sufferers appears to age more slowly than in those who have not experienced any acne in their lifetime,” says Dr Simone Ribero of King’s College London, who lead the research.

“Our findings suggest that the cause could be linked to the length of telomeres which appears to be different in acne sufferers and means their cells may be protected against ageing,” she continued.

According to Dr Ribero, it's all down to cells called telomeres, which are linked to how fast your skin ages.

They found telomeres shrink as as you age, however they're longer in women who suffer from acne.

And while the research didn't actually say that having acne may slow down the ageing process, they did find that a gene associated with acne is also linked to telomeres length.
