At the age of 21, Claire Dalton was set to marry the man of her dreams, only little did she know her fiancé had a secret, a secret that later caused her “world to come crashing down within seconds.”

After building a relationship together for four years, Claire was over the moon to be walking down the aisle to marry her ‘best friend’ at their upcoming wedding, however in the days leading up to it, she found something that ‘changed [her] entire view’.

While reaching for his phone to search something on the internet, Claire – a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (also known as Mormons) – discovered that her partner had been watching porn.

For Claire, who values abstinence from sex before marriage, this was the ultimate betrayal of trust that felt like “someone had taken a dagger and fiercely pierced it” into her heart, so-much-so she called off their wedding.

She has since shared her story to Love What Matters for others who may experience what relationship therapists call ‘betrayal trauma’.

“I’m THAT girl that spent 6 months with a ring on her finger. That girl that planned an entire wedding, only to find out a week prior it was all a lie,” she started her post.

“I wanted to scream. I wanted to cry. I wanted to kick and punch the wall,” she said of the moment she found, “multiple windows open of sick and twisted ideas of what women supposedly look like”.

She explained the sickness in her stomach as she attempted to get the truth – which later proved to be that he had a porn addiction problem.

“The coldest thing I’ve ever witnessed in my entire life is the lying eyes of the man I love, gazing deep into my soul as multiple lies rolled from his lips.”

However, since sharing her story, Claire copped a heap of backlash about leaving her fiancé that led her to write a follow-up piece to address her reasoning and detail the effects of pornography addiction.

“I’ve officially been bashed by the internet for my religion, my personality, my values, my mind, my writing, my experiences, my dreams, and anything else that people could manage to find wrong with me,” she wrote.

Claire backed her decision to ‘jump ship’ by detailing her belief that true love cannot exist without chastity, fidelity, loyalty, and honesty, that fall under God’s Law.

Detailing the wedding, Claire revealed that they had already sent out over 300 invitations and had to later call each guest to inform them the wedding had been called off.
