Jackie Gillies and Boy George lead celebrity tributes to Melbourne victims

A string of Australian stars have taken to social media to show their support towards the victims after a car ploughed into pedestrians in central Melbourne on Thursday.

Real Housewives Of Melbourne star Jackie Gillies wrote on Twitter: "MELBOURNE, this breaks my heart".

"My prayers are with all the family & their loved ones. God please protect the child and the people that was seriously injured," she continued, adding she believes those responsible should be "jailed for life".

UK music sensation Boy George also shared a touching tweet.

"Melbourne my heart is with you and those hurt in this senseless car attack. #GodBless," he wrote to his fans.

And The Project panellist Gorgi Coghlan, who is based in Melbourne to present the Channel Ten show, encouraged Melbourne-siders to "stay strong" following the ordeal.

Horrified witnesses have described bodies "flying everywhere" when a white 4WD drove into a crowd on Flinders street between Elizabeth and Swanston streets shortly after 4.30pm on Wednesday, reports 7 News.

It comes almost a year after a car ploughed through pedestrians on Bourke Street.

Emergency services were quick to arrive at the scene and police have arrested the driver of the car, a statement from Victoria Police media said.

Victoria Police have identified the driver as a 32-year-old Australian citizen of Afghan descent.

Another male, aged 24, who may not be related to the incident, was also arrested at the scene, police said.
