Is Hannah really dead? Did Alex die? Did Tyler shoot Alex? Why is Clay's stage makeup so bad? These are just some of the questions that have plagued viewers, with dozens of explanations being floated to answer each one.

But one theory has the power to explain an awful lot – how, exactly, does Tony always seem to be there at exactly the right moment to talk Clay down from whatever panic he's gotten into?

And why is Tony so damn wise, for a high-schooler?

Well, brace yourself: he's a guardian angel. Or more accurately, a ghost.

Hello, Tony spends the entire series enabling Hannah's "spirit" to move on.

And apart from the fact that he's always weirdly available to dispense the perfect advice for any given moment, and the fact that he effectively acts as a gateway to a dead girl's deepest secrets, consider Tony's wardrobe.

Is it not the ideal capsule wardrobe of a bad-boy high schooler from the 1950s? Doesn't it just scream Rebel Without a Cause? What if he's not just a hipster with retro taste but an actual non-living, non-breathing, leather-jacket-wearing rocker leftover from 70 years ago?

Just saying.
