This glorious work of fiction appears to have started with UK tabloid The Sun, who used an unnamed source to lift the lid on the 'secret couple' who were reportedly introduced by mutual friends earlier in the year. Their source said: "Charlize and Eric get along incredibly well. They started off as friends but things are blossoming between them."

The insider added: "Eric is down to earth and funny and Charlize thinks the world of him. It's early days but they're very fond of each other."

While it's the kind of romance that was almost so unlikely it seemed possible, Eric's camp (no pun intended) spoke on the record to Gossip Cop, confirming there was "no truth" to the rumour.

Eric himself took to Twitter to dispel the rumours, tweeting: "I wish people would stop spreading rumors that Charlize Theron and I are dating. Its starting to make Halle Berry jealous."

Eric recently announced his split from girlfriend of three years, Broadway star Katherine Tokarz. Charlize hasn't 'officially' dated anyone since splitting from boyfriend of nine years, Irish actor Stuart Townsend in 2010.
