The series of shocking images show three-year-old Aylan Kurdi's lifeless body being discovered and carried by a Turkish police officer.

The boy's mother and four-year-old brother also drowned in the accident, and while his father survived, he tried for three hours to save his family from drowning.

"My children slipped through my hands," he cried, when recalling the incident. "It was dark and everyone was screaming."

When The Project co-host Waleed Aly showed one of the images, mother of two Carrie could no longer hold back her tears.

"I just can’t look at that without being so upset," she cried.

"It just makes me think about how lucky, lucky I am that I live in Australia, that my children live in Australia. That’s what it is."

This isn't the first time we've seen a heartfelt display of emotion from Carrie.

The 34-year-old used her Gold Logie win this year as a platform to raise awareness for brain cancer, a disease that killed her first husband in 2010.
