She took to social media to apologise to her fans for pulling out of her Melbourne Cup anthem performance on Tuesday, but many were still left scratching their heads as to exactly why she cancelled.
Speculation was rife that a 'wardrobe disagreement' was to blame, and now the 26-year-old singer has finally come clean.
Mauboy told the Daily Telegraph she became "overwhelmed" when an argument broke out between her management and race organisers over her outfit.
"Four minutes before I am about to be walked out, people on one side are bickering with people on another side, " she explained.
"It started to suffocate me.
"Time stopped and I could see it all going on around me... it was really horrible," Mauboy said.
The This Ain't Love hitmaker also revealed that she had never experienced a panic attack before, so was left "scared" after the episode.
A day after the event - where backup singer Nadia Aya replaced Mauboy to sing the national anthem at the very last moment - the singer tweeted an apology to her fans.
"I was really looking forward to it and of all the days for things to go wrong, unfortunately this was the one. I am so sorry to everyone for the disappointment," she wrote.
