Nigella Lawson: "Everyone makes mistakes in life"

Celebrated British TV chef Nigella Lawson has admitted that she has "made mistakes" in her life but does not regret making them.

Speaking to a sold-out crowd at the Business Chicks Breakfast in Sydney, the voluptuous brunette was surprisingly candid about her life philosophy.

"Everyone makes mistakes in the kitchen and out of the kitchen," Lawson said.

"It's expecting not to that seems to be the instant way of hobbling yourself and it makes everything feel like you're taking an exam."

Lawson is certainly no stranger to having her dirty laundry aired for all to see.

The celebrity chef was blocked from boarding a British Airways flight to Los Angeles at London's Heathrow Airport in March last year because of her previous confession to taking drugs.

Lawson admitted to taking cocaine seven times on two occasions during a trial against her former personal assistants last November.

She said at the time: "I've never been a drug addict, I've never been a habitual user. There are two occasions in my life when I used cocaine."

While Lawson chose not to delve into the gritty details of her past, she admitted she had "learned" from her previous misgivings.

"Sometimes they're very simple mistakes like you haven't been paying attention, and sometimes you need a certain amount of structure - there are rules in life and you have to respect that - but sometimes you also have to learn when to disregard that and just go with the flow, you need to do that in life and in cooking," she said.

The author also touched upon her hatred of the 'clean eating' craze which has taken over social media and involves eating only fresh, clean and unprocessed food.

"I have nothing against eating wonderful produce and avoiding processed food, so it's not that sort of eating I object to - but I don't like when food is used to assume moral superiority or to be a form of smugness.

"I don't like it if I feel the pleasure of food is taken away and it's all about fearing food and how to avoid it," she said.

Lawson also touched upon societies obsession with thinness saying: "Having seen people die of cancer I don't equate thinness with health. Saying that, that doesn't mean it's a great thing to eat 10 cream buns and take no exercise. As with everything in life it's about balance."

Lawson is in Australia to promote her new book Simply Nigella.
