According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, new director James Foley wanted to replace the Irish stud as Christian Grey due to his 'lackluster' performance.

"It came to a point when he almost gave up on the 33-year-old actor," an insider revealed.

While the much-anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey was a box office hit, it won the Worst Film of the Year award at the 2016 Razzies.

Dornan and Dakota Johnson, who plays Anastasia Steele in the film adaptation of the 'mummy porn' trilogy, also took home the 'award' for Worst Screen Combo, as well as individual Worst Actor and Worst Actress gongs.

This isn't the first time the on-screen duo's chemisty has been questioned - during the shooting of the first film, Us Weekly reported that director Sam Taylor-Johnson had to reshoot scenes due to the lack of chemistry between the two leads.

Speaking of the controversy at the time, Dornan shot down the rumours, telling the Daily Mail, "they wouldn’t have shot the film with us if there was a chemistry problem".
