What Michael Fassbender thinks about being 'demoted' in X-Men: Apocalypse

"I'm following someone? No, that doesn't make any sense!"

This was the reaction of Oscar-nominee Michael Fassbender when he read that his X-Men character, the powerful Magneto, would turn from leader to follower in the latest film in the franchise.

X-Men: Apocalypse, which marks Fassbender's third film in the role of the younger Magneto, sees his character in a more vulnerable state than ever before, turning to an all-powerful mutant for help seeking revenge on the world after he endures an epic tragedy.

"Oh, ok...well he’s the all powerful mutant, then I’ll follow him then if I have to follow anyone," jokes Fassbender when Yahoo7 Entertainment asked how he felt about being the second-most powerful man on screen in X-Men Apocalypse.

"It seemed kind of odd, to be honest, that Magneto would be a follower like that, but that’s why the Magda story at the beginning really helped, because it feels like he’s got nothing to lose at that point," he says.

The all-powerful mutant in question is Apocalypse, the original mutant (or "OM" as Fassbender likes to call him), played by Oscar Isaac, with Fassbender revealing he was a massive fan of the Star Wars actor before they met on set.

"It’s always nice when you meet somebody that you look up to...and you get along with them," he says of meeting his co-star.

"We got on great, we went out for dinner the first night and started kicking around ideas, it was just really easy."

Fassbender also reunited with his X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past co-stars for the latest film (including Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult) an experience the actor describes as "sweet".

"Six years have passed [since we first started working together], and a lot of things have happened. We’re like a family, so I feel very close to all of those guys," he says.

"Then it was nice to see the new batch [of mutants and actors] coming through to get rid of us…out with the old and in with the new," he laughs.
