Sally Ledger: "Heath lived off two minute noodles everyday!"

Heath Ledger's mother, Sally, and sister, Kate, opened up about the late actor's struggle to crack the American market on The Morning Show.

The pair spoke to hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies about the Heath Ledger Scholarship, an award created in his honour, which helps budding Aussie actors to establish themselves in the States.

"We think Heath would've absolutely loved something like this himself to give him the leg up into the US market," said his sister Kate.

The late actor's mother revealed that Heath had a difficult time trying to get work in the US, and even lived off two minute noodles because he was so broke!

"Heath struggled with what he went through on the international circuit," Sally explained.

"We're talking two minute noodles everyday. It was a long time before he was offered something that he chose, that he was interested in and wanted to further his career with."

She added: "He didnt want to be the typical pretty boy Californian image. He had his mind set on where he wanted to head and that meant saying 'No' sometimes to a couple of things. He didn't sell himself short and he stuck to his guns."

The Dark Knight actor's sister went on to describe how Heath used to try and schmooze the big-name directors in Hollywood - without a cent to his name.

"The best story is when he was out at some Sky Bar with all the directors and producers, and he was a nobody. He phoned home to Mum and Dad and said: 'Can you wire me some money? It's my turn to buy drinks!"

Larry also questioned the pair about Heath's daughter, Matilda, who currently lives in New York with her mother, actress Michelle Williams.

"Matilda is turning 11," said Kate. "She's amazing. We're alway in touch with her, she's a beautiful girl."
