TMZ reports Chicago Police Department received a call from Irish authorities saying the singer called her family an hour ago to tell them she was suicidal and planning to "jump off a bridge" in the Chicago area.
A police alert on the Chicago PD scanner said: "The word from the Ireland police sergeant Claire Mulligan, Dublin, Ireland, is saying that at 1530 hours Sinead O'Connor called and said, 'I'm on a bridge in Chicago and I'm going to jump'."
The site reports that local police originally thought they had spotted Sinead but turns it out was only someone who matched her description.
Fans have already taken to Twitter pleading with the singer not to take her own life.

Feel a great amount of empathy for Sinead O'Connor. Suicidal ideation is a formidable opponent.

The singer has a history of mental health issues. In November last year she revealed she'd "taken an overdose" on her official Facebook page.
It was not her first suicide attempt.
In 2007, she told Oprah that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and tried to kill herself on her 33rd birthday.
Just last month she was reported missing - with her friends and family fearing she had taken her own life. She was later found at a Chicago hotel.
A day after that incident the singer went on Facebook and posted an unhinged rant aimed at her family.
In a post aimed at her ex-husband and children the Nothing Compares 2 U singer wrote: "Every one of you better pray that I die".
She continued: "Because I'm suing the f***ing lot of you for what you've done to me if I manage to live through it".
"I will see you all in court," she continues.
"I want damages. I have been unable to work. I have lost last year’s income and this year’s. I have had enormous medical expenses, and enormous trauma because of your torturing of me. As I said. You fu**ing best pray God kills me because unlike my poor mother, I will not let this drop."
