Exclusive 'Star Trek' interview: "Making this franchise has been overwhelming"

Why should people go an see the third Star Trek film?
John Cho: Chris Pine is in it so there's something for you to look at and it's going to be a fun movie. I think it's an interesting commentary of the world we live in.
Karl Urban: I think whether you're a long term fan or whether you've never seen a Star Trek movie before, you can go and see this film and have a great time and very quickly understand who the characters are and what they're trying to achieve.

Where do you guys find your characters in the latest movie?
JC: Sulu finds his belief system challenged and he has a family to worry about now so the stakes for him are quite personal.
KU: My character, Bones, ends up with Spock and we're in a situation of great danger and we have to learn to work together in order to survive. It's a lot of fun and there's a lot of great comedy in it because those two characters are such polar opposites.

The Lord of The Rings cast got matching tattoo to celebrate the franchise. Did you and your co-stars get anything special done to commemorate the third movie?
JC: We don't need a tattoo to remind us of how close we are, Goddammit (laughs). Besides there isn't that much bare skin left on me.
KU: No, but we shared multiple dinners and multiple bottles of wine while making this movie. We were all away together shooting it on location in Vancouver and Dubai so it was a lot of fun.

Do you have a favourite Star Trek movie so far?
JC: The first one was always the sweetest. I was so overwhelmed. It was a time we were reconnecting with a really important piece of American pop culture. The energy was very intsmes, getting to know one another, it was like the honeymoon phase of the relationship.... now we're all divorced and hate each other (laughs).
