“It changes your ability to dream, to look forward…I spent so many years feeling no hope – like, no hope,” she tells The Australian Women’s Weekly.

The Golden Logie winner opened up about being by her husband’s side until the very end. She said it felt as though she was sealed in a losing battle and admitted that it goes on for “so long”.

“There are periods of inactivity where you go for the MRI and there’s no change and you go, ‘Hey we can breathe for another six months’,” she told AWW.

She admits that she is still reminded of her late husband every time she looks at her son Oliver.

Carrie married Greg had their son in 2007, two years after they married - in December 2005. The couple wed five years after Greg’s diagnosis.

The mother-of-two says that going through a cancer battle changes you as a person.

“It changes your ability to dream, to look forward... I spent so many years feeling no hope — like, no hope,” she said.

As there is no cure, Carrie admits it is ultimately a waiting game. As a family member she says you can’t pretend to be suffering because you’re watching someone else suffer.

Carrie gave an impassioned plea when she won her Gold Logie for most popular TV personality in 2015. The TV host put on a beanie and asked everyone to do more for rain cancer research.

She has since launched Beanies 4 Brain Cancer and has raised a lot of money for The Royal Melbourne Hospital, with her initiative continuing to grow.

She tells that since then, “I felt like, actually, there could be hope.”

August issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly is on sale now.
