Rachel Griffiths on who will be playing Michelle Payne in upcoming biopic

Rachel Griffiths has opened up about her upcoming movie on Australian female jockey Michelle Payne, who historically won the Melbourne Cup in 2015.

“We’re in writing stage at the minute,” Griffiths told The Morning Show.

And when asked is she has anyone in mind to play Michelle, she added, “My lips have to be sealed. But if we closed our eyes and thought of someone, we’d probably all think of the same person. I’ll leave that with you.”

Griffiths recently told Sunday Style why it’s so important to her to tell the jockey’s story.

“Michelle told me people used to think women weren’t strong enough to ride, especially in the long races,” the Six Feet Under star said.

“But she said it’s not about the strength, it’s about the relationship you have with the horse. It’s a sport women can compete in – as breeders, as owners, as jockeys. They’re competing equally, and that’s exciting.

“Everyone [who has met her] is touched by her quiet confidence, determination and sweetness. She’s one of the most hardworking athletes around.”
