Mrs Mangel from 'Neighbours' has died

If you’re an 80s kid, you’ll definitely remember Vivean Gray, who played Mrs Mangel on the hit TV show, Neighbours.

Known for her hilarious antics as the resident “busybody” on Ramsay Street, Mrs Magel terrorised the neighbourhood from 1986-1988, leaving a lasting legacy in her wake.

In fact, Gray played the controversial character so well that she decided to leave the show after people kept shouting abuse at her on the street.

“Because it was so successful I could barely set foot outside my own door without someone screaming abuse at horrid old Mrs Mangel,” Gray explained at the time.
"People didn't seem to appreciate it was acting. So I decided to take a break."

That she did, until her death overnight aged 92.

Mark Little, who played her on-screen son Joe, said he felt privileged to know and work with her.

“She was one of the great Aussie actors and made her way to television and I was lucky enough [to work with her],” said Little.

"She was one of the main reasons I joined Neighbours because I was going to be her estranged son."

Alan Fletcher, who plays Dr Karl Kennedy on the hit show, expressed his sadness over Gray’s death on Twitter:

In addition, Rick Maier of Australia's Network Ten said her contribution to Australian drama will never be forgotten.

"It is a very sad day for the Neighbours family,” said Maier.

"Mrs Mangel was the ultimate busybody, remembered for her conservatism and her caustic wit," said Neighbours' executive producer Jason Herbison, describing Gray as "a true soap legend".
