Miranda Lambert breaks down while singing a song she wrote with her ex Blake Shelton

Miranda Lambert broke down on stage over her ex-husband Blake Shelton.

While singing her 2012 single Over You - which she co-wrote with her ex - the songstress burst into tears on stage at a concert in Illinois, and the crowd had to help her finish the song.

The former couple wrote the song about a tragedy The Voice US judge experienced as a teenager when his older brother died in a car accident.

Miranda, 32, told the audience she was having a rough night and feeling hormonal.

"I told you I was a mess," she said while wiping away tears, before she began crying again during her track The House That Built Me.

Her onstage break down comes a day after Blake, 40, gushed about his new lady love and The Voice co-judge Gwen Stefani, revealing she "saved" him after his divorce last year.

"I won't forget that day," he said of when the No Doubt singer learned of his split. "I looked over at Gwen – who I didn't really know – and she had these huge tears in her eyes. I thought, 'Wow, she feels super bad for me'."

It turned that Gwen was also in the process of separating from husband Gavin Rossdale, after nearly 13 years of marriage.

"It went from that, to checking in on each other once a week through email – 'This s*** happened to me, what happened to you?' – to maybe three times a week, then every day, to 'Hey, here's my phone number if you ever want to text.' Next thing I know, I wake up and she's all I care about, and I'm wondering if she feels the same about me," he added.

"Who else on earth could understand going through a high-profile divorce from another musician?" he says. "You can't even imagine the similarities in our divorces."
