But despite Ruby being the world's latest 'It' girl, she admits she struggled to get taken seriously as an actress in Australia because she was an MTV VJ.

"I couldn’t get an acting job in Australia because nobody was ever going to believe me as anything except Ruby Rose,” she said to the Daily Telegraph.

“Even when [prison drama] Wentworth was being cast I was told, ‘Nah, I don’t think people are going to buy that,’ which is ironic because I ended up on Orange."

Her inability to pursue acting down under prompted her to move to the States in 2013.

A year went by without much success, so Ruby and some friends decided to create a short film called Break Free.

The video, which tackles gender identity, sees Ruby undergo a transformation from female to male, went viral and led to her being cast in Orange Is The New Black.

"I literally had two and half years of tumbleweed," the 30-year-old revealed.

"But now it’s the complete opposite."

The in-demand film star recently wrapped up filming xXx: Return of Xander Cage with Vin Diesel, but has other flicks in the pipeline, including Resident Evil: The Final Chapter with Milla Jovovich and John Wick: Chapter Two alongside Keanu Reeves.

And we're pretty sure you're going to see a whole lot more of her.
