Margot Robbie explains why Jared Leto's role was cut so dramatically in Suicide Squad

Margot Robbie explained why so many of Jared Leto's scenes from Suicide Squad ended up on the cutting room floor.

The actress believes that The Joker's own storyline would've confused the existing one (where the Enchantress, played by Cara Delevingne, is the villain).

"They probably realised that the emotional through-line of the story had to be the mission that we were on, and kind of explaining the Enchantress’ position and all that kind of stuff," she said to YouTube star Hazel Hayes.

"And the [Harley and Joker] backstory stuff, though it’s magic, some of the stuff we shot was insane. They are flashbacks, and they’re meant to be snippets.

"I think when we were filming, maybe we got too engrossed in the flashbacks. Especially when you’ve got Jared, he’s going so deep with that character. ... So, there’s a lot, but it just didn’t make sense to confuse the present storyline to incorporate all that."

Jared Leto - who ends up being onscreen for a total of around 15 minutes - said that majority of what he filmed ended up unused.

"There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start. There was so much that we shot that’s not in the film," he said.

"If I die anytime soon, it’s probably likely that it’ll surface somewhere. That’s the good news about the death of an actor is all that stuff seems to come out."

Director David Ayer confirmed the cut footage which will "maybe" end up in a future Blu-ray release.
