Aussie Ben Mendelsohn sees off GOTs to win Emmy

Ben Mendelsohn is now an Emmy winner!

Despite being pitched as the ultimate outsider, the Netflix star has taken home his first Emmy Award for playing Danny Rayburn in Bloodline.

Seeing off stiff competition from Game of Thrones heavyweights Kit Harington and Peter Dinklage, Australia's own actor has finally had his moment, snaring victory in the Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role category.

Indeed, while Hollywood noms have become a regular gig for Ben, success has mostly eluded him - until now!

For the second straight year the 47-year-old Melbourne-based actor received an Emmy nomination for his role in the Netflix TV series, adding to a Golden Globe nod he scored in 2016 for the show.

The actor went home empty-handed from last year's Emmy Awards and the 2016 Golden Globes... and the moment was finally his this year. But sadly filming commitments meant he was a no-show at the ceremony.

"I'll have it at for home when you get back, Ben. Thanks," Empire star Taraji P. Henson said after announcing the award.

Ben's Bloodline co-star Kyle Chandler was also in the running for an Emmy in the outstanding lead actor in a drama series category, but that award went to Mr Robot's Rami Malek.
