EXCLUSIVE: Sigourney Weaver's rules to live your life by

She's one of the most kick-ass movie heroines of our time. So if anyone knows how to live life and live it well, it's the alien-slaying, gorilla-saving mega-star.

Which is why we're taking Sigourney Weaver's rules to live your life by from the latest edition of PORTER magazine, and running with them!

BE KIND.
You never know what kind of day people are having so keep your antennae up.

DON’T TOLERATE LIES,
Such as companies deliberately misleading the public and saying that global warming isn’t real, putting money ahead of the planet’s welfare.

LEARN TO SAY ‘NO’
A good friend taught me the virtue of the word; it stops you from feeling like you are a hamster in a wheel. Make time for the things that really matter, like family.

GET OUTSIDE.
I love gardens and luckily in New York (where I live) there are lots of parks. It doesn’t take much – even walking past a house with window boxes can make my day.

INVEST IN GREAT TAILORING.
My husband was fitted for a tuxedo in Hong Kong recently; seeing a suit being made is just magic.

EAT WELL.
I’ve tried being vegan and feel jollier for cutting out meat. It’s given me a different energy and cleared any mental fuzziness.

FLY BY THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS
And don’t worry about failure – it’s a stepping stone and teaches you a great many things.

FIND A CONNECTION.
On a film set I’m surrounded by a big family of collaborators; it’s not dissimilar to a gorilla group. I love that about my job – sharing the moment with other people.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT.
I remember reading an interview with Bill Nighy in The New York Times and he said that he was working on neither regretting the past nor fearing the future. I thought that was just brilliant

ALLOW FOR A LITTLE CHAOS.
Things never go how you imagine they will. I didn’t want to make a science fiction film about a monster on board a spaceship – I wanted to do Shakespeare – but it worked out.
