'It makes me so angry': Kylie Gillies slams Joe Hockey over taxpayer-funded babysitter

What was meant to be an innocuous discussion on The Morning Show today turned into a rant no one saw coming.

Joe Hockey recently came under fire for using taxpayers’ money for babysitting costs as his new role as Australia's ambassador in the US.

TV host Kylie Gillies was couldn’t help but voice her concerns about how the politician was allowed to claim his childcare costs as a tax deduction and not everyone else.

“It makes me so angry,” the mother-of-two said on the segment she co-hosts with Larry Emdur.

“Working families, for years, have been told they can’t claim childcare costs as a legitimate tax deduction. I don't care if he does, providing they let the rest of us do it as well,” the 49-year-old presenter said.

“You can’t have two sets of rules.”

The former treasurer of the Liberal party was caught out by Fairfax Media - who requested documents under freedom of information laws - and found Hockey had been dipping into his entertainment allowance to pay for his child-minding bills.

During the show, Channel 7’s Olivia Leeming was reporting from Canberra and told the hosts the 51-year-old ambassador had already forked out $2500 for babysitting during the five months in his new role in Washington D.C.

“If they let him do it, they’ve got to let the rest of us do it. You can’t have two sets of rules. It makes me so angry,” Kylie said of the diplomat who currently earns $360,000 a year and also receives $90,000 as a pensioner for being a former cabinet minister.

“The entertainment budget is to buy scones for Barack Obama, not to pay the babysitter to look after your kid,” Kylie exclaimed.

Joe has three kids, and while the busy man may need help looking after his children in the US, most Aussies would spew at the thought of a politician using their hard earned money to pay for his babysitting bills.

Kylie did not think this was a great look given Joe once said in parliament: “The age of entitlement is over, we need to be serious about reining in government spending.”

Speaking for all mothers who work their butts off to pay for their children’s childcare and aren't allowed to deduct these expenses, Kylie insisted Hockey’s entertainment allowance “is to buy Barak a cup of tea, not to baby sit the kids. Or if it is, let's have that rule for EVERYBODY and let us, all working families, allow childcare costs to be claimed as a tax deduction.”

Larry tried to calm his co-host down, telling Kylie: “Don’t be so angry, it’s not like he’s hosting a morning show, he’s the ambassador over there in the US. He can’t say to Barack Obama, ‘Sorry I can’t come over, i’ve got to take the girls to In-N-Out Burger.'”

“It’s to buy scones!” she insisted.

“What you’re saying Kylie is that next time you get invited to The White House to see Barack Obama, you should be able to do that, claim it?” asked Larry.

“Yeah, sure,” she said.
