Mariah Carey has reportedly fired her long-time creative director Anthony Burrell following her “disastrous” New Year’s Eve performance.
The Emotions hitmaker had a fallout with Anthony post her ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve performance in Times Square and according to an Entertainment Tonight source: “He’s not being brought back [in 2017] for a number of reasons.”
Mariah reportedly blames the technical issues with her earpiece on the creative director despite everyone else, including her backup dancers, hearing the music perfectly.
While Anthony is yet to comment on the sacking, he did however defend the 46-year-old singer on Twitter after her disappointing show.
“I haven’t been able to watch NYE performance. 30 sec from live TV, boss couldn’t hear her own vocal in her in-ears from Mic. #heartbroken,” he wrote.
Shortly after he tweeted: “Sucks to see all of the hateful messages ... Peep[s] are so quick to judge, not knowing we were all in a state of panic.”
The news Mariah let Anthony go comes after the Without You star broke her silence about being humiliated.
Mariah’s camp initially blamed Dick Clark Productions for the fail and claimed they sabotaged her performance to get “Mariah drama” for ratings.
Mariah opened up to Entertainment Weekly and said: “All I can say is Dick Clark was an incredible person and I was lucky enough to work with him when I first started in the music business. I’m of the opinion that Dick Clark would not have let an artist go through that and he would have been as mortified as I was in real time,” she said.
James Packer’s ex said despite her onstage flop, “It’s not going to stop me from doing a live event in the future. But it will make me less trusting of using anyone outside of my own team.”
Despite saying she has become less trusting of those outside her team, Mariah still fired her creative director, who was very close her.
She told EW her fans have been “so supportive” and that she’s “so appreciative of them,” and added that “it really was an incredible holiday season that turned into a horrible New Year’s Eve.”
Meanwhile, fellow celebrities haven't been so kind to Mariah, slamming her for blaming others and not taking ownership of her mistakes.
NYE host Jenny McCarthy said during her Tuesday Sirius XM show: “I think Mariah was nervous as hell. I think she chose really tough songs to try to sing along with. I think Emotions, that song, I mean her voice is not there anymore. I don’t think there is a problem with her inner ears. I just don’t. I think she used it as an excuse.”
