Samuel reacts to Molly crashing his Gold Logies speech

He was named the coveted Gold Logie winner on Sunday night for his portrayal of Molly Meldrum, and Samuel Johnson had a mixture of emotions when the music icon interrupted his speech.

The 38-year-old actor, whose Logies victory was dedicated to his sister Connie, says he wasn't able to deliver the touching tribute to his cancer-stricken sibling he had initially planned to do.

"I had it all planned," Samuel said in the media room at Melbourne's Crown Palladium following his big win on Sunday night.

"It’s about Connie for me so I had a bunch of stuff planned. I might post my speech on Facebook."

During an appearance on The Morning Show the following day, Samuel said the onstage surprise was just "classic Molly... it’s always catastrophic when Molly’s around".

On Sunday night Molly made his way onto the stage half way through Samuel's speech to add his own unique congratulations.

Pushing Samuel out of the way, Molly said, “Ah, can I just tell you something that you never do as an actor, or as a TV presenter?”

“You never say ‘um’, ‘er’, ‘um, ‘er’ - alright keep going!”

The moment was met with laughs from the audience, which only got louder when Molly swore, saying, “do yourself a f***ing favour!” before giving Samuel back the mic.

It wasn’t much longer before Molly was back in the spotlight however, and the veteran TV presenter went on to hand Samuel – who played him in the TV mini series Molly – a golden cowboy hat.

“I know it was very hard to play an old drama queen like myself,” he said, “So on behalf of the drama queen of Australia, I’d like to crown you also with my gold hat.”

It came after Molly gave his own lengthy speech during which he looked back on how the mini series came to be.

Earlier in the night Samuel had an opportunity to pay tribute to his terminally ill sister Connie, when he accepted the award for Best Actor.

'My sister is succumbing finally to the perils of cancer after a three-decade long tussle and rather than rolling over, she's going out blazing with an attempted world record for the longest line of coins, absurdly,' he said, clearly emotional.

He went on to describe what could be his sister's last great act of courage and love, raising awareness for 'cancery families' across Australia.

'She's putting together a row of coins in the shape of a love heart, hopefully the biggest love heart this country has ever seen,' he explained, 'made of 5 cent pieces from cancer-y families all around the country, with the entire proceeds going directly to scientists and researchers, no skimming, no admin.'

He went on to dedicate his award to his sister and urged families to donate to their charity, Love Your Sister, to help others 'terrorised' by the disease.

"I love you, Connie!" he shouted into to the cheering crowd as the speech concluded. "I love you!"

Samuel's 37 year-old sister Connie is fighting breast cancer.

She's the mother of two boys, and has fought cancer three times- the first time, at age 11, Connie was diagnosed with a bone tumour in her leg, and at 22 had a tumour in her womb.

Her life expectancy, the Love Your Sister site says, is six months to a year.

Actor Samuel has in the past raised money and awareness for Connie by riding a unicycle.
