She wakes Sydney up with her 2Day FM breakfast radio show, but well before hitting the airwaves Em Rusciano was an Australian Idol contestant.

The 38-year-old has opened up about what happened behind-the-scenes on the singing reality show and its subsequent finalists' tour, revealing she almost got into a 'fist fight' with a fellow co-star.

Speaking with co-host Harley Breen, she revealed conflict arose when she made a comment about contestant Chanel Cole's spray tan.

Em explained she had noticed Chanel applying 'tan in a can' to her legs, and that she had suggested she would need 'more than one'.

Apparently Chanel took offence and asked, "Are you calling me fat", but Em had justified, 'those cans are super tiny, I use five of them to tan my legs".

Revealing more about the backstage drama on Australian Idol, Em said: "We had to have a live-in psychiatrist in the house because all of us were hectic.

"Casey Donovan on the phone constantly which turned out to be her fake boyfriend and it was actually unbeknownst to her a lesbian lover, you had me crying every five minutes away from my kid fighting with Chanel, you had Anthony trying to conceal the fact he was gay. It was full on, it was crazy!"

Em made it to the top 10 on the series, finishing in ninth place on the reality show's second season in 2004.

Casey Donovan went on to win the competition, with Anthony Callea placing second.
