Fresh off the beachside set of Baywatch, Hollywood hottie Zac Efron is gearing up for a gritty new role as one of America’s most notorious serial killers.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 29-year-old has signed on to star as Ted Bundy in a new film entitled Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, which will explore the killer’s relationship with his girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer.
The dark new role will see Zac stepping into the shoes of the “evil yet simultaneously chillingly normal” Bundy, who was convicted of raping and killing at least 30 young women in seven states between 1974-1978. It is believed the actual body count could be much higher.
He was known for disarming his exclusively white, female victims with his charming personality, but once referred to himself as “the most cold-hearted son of a bitch you'll ever meet”.
After starring in several comedies, the role is a particularly dark one for Zac to take on.
Bundy killed with several methods including strangulation and beating, and was also a necrophile who would return to where he had hidden his victim’s bodies.
One of the film's producers, Michael Costigan, told Deadline: “Zac is perfect casting, as he can play both the depth and the charm that this guy had in equal measures, and which allowed him to manipulate these women in such a terrifying way.
"We think in the vein of Nightcrawler or even The Jinx, we are making a psychological thriller that will resonate deeply with audiences.”
Filming for Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile begins in October.
